Original house
An original house is a residential dwelling as it was first built or as it stood on or before 1 July 1948 (when it was built before that date). Any extension, even if completed by a previous property owner, is not the original house (unless it was in place on 1 July 1948).
This term is used for planning permission purposes as defined in the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government document entitled, Permitted development rights for householders. This technical guidance document explains the various rules around development for homeowners and communities.
